For most six-year-olds, jumping into a sandpit barefoot is a harmless thing to do. Not, however, for Rory. He landed on a garden hoe buried beneath the sand. The result? Nine stitches. But that was only the beginning. A flying bat to head during a game of swing ball? Six stitches. Sword fighting with a garden hoe and a rake? Five. Wrapping a Datsun round a lamppost in a collision? Fifty-nine. Total to date: 79 stitches. Now, a perfectly optical circle tattooed on Rory’s back—along with his catalog of scars—reminds him how fragile our balance is.
