If reincarnation were real, Dan would want to come back as an African Pygmy hedgehog ─ specifically, his African Pygmy hedgehog. The Pork’s life goal (he calls her “The Pork”) is to always find the warmest, softest, closest possible place to fall asleep. One time, Dan found The Pork zonked out under a napkin on his desk; that’s all she needed to start basking in the warm sunrays of hedgehog dreamland. Must be nice.
One unique skill that emanates from Dan’s youthful explorations is the art of Poi, or fire-spinning. It started off with a few glowsticks tied to shoelaces, quickly moved to a more sophisticated LED configuration on neon nylon rope, and eventually erupted into Kevlar wicks soaked in white gas on the ends of chains and set ablaze. With fire all around him and rhythm in his ears, Dan feels alive.
